How Apple Pay and the Apple Watch will change the web

We’re already a connected culture. We both depend on and covet the on demand access to people and information that our mobile devices give us. As time goes on, we keep finding new ways to enhance our connection with technology.

Apple’s presentation on the 9th will have long standing effects on the way we use and interact with technology. iPhones are nothing new, but Apple announced the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, both giving larger screen dimensions than were on previous Apple devices. The new phones are at the top of their field, but nothing we haven’t seen before. It is the next two announcements that will more than likely change the way we use the internet.

Apple Pay, although, not the most exciting announcement from a wow factor point of view, is one of the most important. Today’s world has left most people quite vulnerable to having their financial information stolen. Apple Pay now offers a secure way of paying both online and in many stores all over the world, without ever having to hand a credit card to a cashier, or ever having to transmit your credit card number and security code online to some stranger that you’ve never met. Each transaction is encrypted with its own special one-time use security code, meaning that your information is not traceable. The encryption also means that apple does not have a way of finding out anything about your transactions. They are completely private. The major banks and credit card companies are on board with it, and with Apple behind it, that means it is probably going to build some more momentum than the Google versions were trying to.

It is not yet clear if this will require any design rethinking on the part of e-commerce websites, or if it is something that payment gateway companies will handle, but this will inevitably be a great move for financial security.

The next announcement could also very well be a game changer. The Apple Watch was announced, showing off the first smart watch that makes a case for actually owning wearable technology. It showed off a whole slew of functions that are bound to make our lives easier and healthier too. My question is, if the ability to surf the web is available on the device, what will that mean for web design. Responsive design has gone a long way, but on such a small screen, it may still take some real re-thinking.

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will be available later this month, as well as Apple Pay. The Apple Watch will be available early next year. So we’ll have to wait until then to find out what web designing for a watch will be like.
