How to make your website easier to use by organizing your main menu

A very common problem among websites is lack of or bad organization. If the user can’t find what they’re looking for quickly, they would rather go to a different website than take another few seconds to try to find it on yours. It should be immediately obvious how to get where they want to go.

The first major step that should be taken, is organizing your main menu to be very intuitive, and to not have too many items. Your main menu should have a link back to the “Home” page, and a link to your “Contact Us” page at a minimum. It also makes sense to have a direct link to your “About Us” page, which could also drop down into a second level menu with items such as your Team page, Galleries, and anything else that’s directly related to your business that isn’t product or service related. The final sections that should be in your main menu will probably be industry specific, such as having a link to your “Services” at a glance page, or have Services drop down into a second level menu to list all of your main services. You might have a “Products” menu item, that drops down into product categories. Or possibly if you are a restaurant, you would have a direct link to your online “Menu” so customers can see what they can order.

Don’t put too much in your menu. With the combinations available above, you may end up with roughly 5 items in your main menu. You could have a few more added and still be fine, such as having a link to your “Blog” or a “News” section, or something else that you know would be crucial to your customers that they would want to get to quickly. But don’t have too many items in your top level menu, because that’s when things might start to get out of hand and un-organized.
