New Year Resolutions for your website

Happy New Year! May 2016 bring you fantastic success in your business, happiness and health in your life and most importantly balance.

As we start the first week of 2016, site owners or managers should set new year resolutions for their website so that it becomes a powerful marketing tool for their company and supports all of their business goals this year. To keep the resolutions organized we have divided them into 3 distinct areas listed below.

=1= Take your website seriously:

Your website is not like a brochure you might leave at an event. It is not passive marketing. On the contrary, it is your store front on the web that represents your company or organization 24/7/365. Surveys have shown that visitors will judge the quality of a company’s services and products within the first few seconds when visiting a website. What does your website say about you? If it has been 3 years or more since you redesigned your website, take a strong and genuine look at it.

– Is it responsive to new mobile devices?
– Is its design impressive and representative of the image you want to portrait?
– Does it function well?
– Does it guide your prospective clients easily and quickly to the call-to-action you have set for them?
– Are there calls-to-action?
– Etc …

In other words, take a fresh new look at your site and make sure it is working for you not against you.

=2= Protect your website:

2015 has seen an incredible and unprecedented increase in website hackings. The numbers are staggering as it is estimated that 2015 about doubled the 2014 numbers. In 2014 alone 9 Million sites were infected! If you are one of these unfortunate site owners, you are not alone.

  • First and foremost have strong secured usernames and passwords for your hosting account, your server (FTP), your database (if you are using a content management system or have eCommerce that means you have a database), your login pages, and so forth.
  • Sign up for backup services. Not having regular clean backups (site+database) is like driving your new car in the rain and traffic without insurance. It is very risky and it is matter of time before your site is hacked and, without backups, you will loose your entire website investment.
  • GoDaddy just released their new Site Backup and Restore product which, for a few dollars each month, securely backs up your website. This means that, if the site is compromised, you can call them 24 hours a day and have them restore the latest clean copy. Enquire today with your hosting provider and see if they provide similar services.
  • Sign up for SiteLock which scans your site and can in many instances remove malicious malware. They have different levels of scanning and protection. At the very least, sign up for their Premium Plan which is often times available with your hosting provider. If your site has been hacked once (or more), sign up for SiteLock Firewall product which (we think) is only available directly with the SiteLock company.
  • Have your webmaster add more encryption to your site. This is not fool proof but worth the investment.
  • Finally, have a SSL on your website. It will encrypt data exchanges on your site such as your contact forms.

=3= Be found online!

For most companies this statement/question is very true: What is the point of a beautiful website if nobody can find it on the Internet? Set aside a monthly budget for Search Engine Optimization and/or Internet Marketing. Just like you spend money on press releases, printed marketing material, possible radio or TV adds, you should have a budget set aside for your website and Internet presence.

Tell your online marketer (note that we can help and offer these types of services) and tell them your budget. They will be able to present you with a plan that fits both your SEO goals and budget.

This year’ New Year Resolutions for your website are as easy as 1-2-3. Well just like dieting and exercising, it is easy but still hard. We are all busy running our business and managing our personal lives. If you do not spend time, energy and budget on your website, you will have no control on its efficiency and its security.

Make these 3 New Year Resolutions today and claim 2016 as YOUR YEAR!

Happy New Year Everyone!
