Responsive Design Series Part 2 – When you should hide or add elements on a mobile device display

Welcome back to our responsive design series. Making your website responsive on mobile devices does not mean that you should try to compress and fit in every single image and text you have on your desktop version on a small device like a smart phone. The new trend is to actually rethink your website so it makes sense to visitors when they are using a phone or tablet to view your site.

Let’s take our own website for instance. The desktop version of our homepage is quite intricate with lots of moving items coming into the screen, lots of text, titles, images, calls-to-action … Though it may look lovely on a regular size computer, on a phone it is simply too much for the user.

On our website we made the decision to hide certain elements so that they do not appear on a smart phone.

Below you can see our regular home page with a double header, full navigational bar, 3 sections placed on top of the slideshow image, etc …

On an iPhone, we made the following changes:

– Removed the email address on the top header,

– Removed the 2 social media icons to streamline the header,

– Changed the menus to a click-able drop down menus with multi levels,

– Hide all text and smaller thumbnail image from the larger slideshow,

– Repositioned the two column-layout under the slider to be one single column.

We did many more changes for the phone and tablet displays to create a pleasant user experience and get our visitors to where they need to go on our site as quickly as possible.

Responsive design can be quite intricate if you want to have it done well. As always make sure to hire an experienced web designer who can show you many sites he has designed himself. Making your site responsive is as important as the design of your website itself.
