Summerizing your website designing

“Summer-izing” is not a word, we know. We meant that there is value in giving a summer feel to your site.

Believe it or not, websites have seasons too just like brick and mortar stores. Depending on your industry and target audience, you may want to consider adjusting your site’s visual display as well as textual content based on the season. This is especially true for retail businesses. For instance, if you sell sporting goods, you already know that during the summer time your store will have bathing suits and water sports related equipment. During winter, you normally display winter sports items such as skis, gloves, etc. it makes sense and the same is true for websites.

Even if your company is not seasonal, giving it a summer feel between June and September is advised. You want to match the mood of your visitors with your website’s appeal so that they can “relate” to you, your services and/or products.

1) Lighten up the overall mood of the site: Think vacation, smiles, sunshine and warmth. If your branding guidelines allow it, change the color scheme to summer colors such as warm yellow, orange, green and blue.

2) Change the photographs on the site to show more outdoor or summer type-sceneries. If outdoor is not an option for your company, chose photos that have colors that most people associate with summertime.

3) Copy: Edit your text to reflect that this is summer. A good call-to-action could be “We hope you enjoy your summer. Don’t forget to call us for…”. Immediately this shows to your visitors that you have recently updated your website. If you offer promo codes or coupons, create one that is summer related. For instance you could have “Mention Sunshine2015 for an additional 20% off this summer”.

4) Lighten up the tone of the site: Take a step back, look at the overall feel of the website. Does it feel fresh and warm like summer? Paying attention to these types of details will set your website apart from your online competitors.

The concept behind summarizing your website is to first relate to your online audience during a specific season and second giving a sense to your visitors that your website is “current”.
