The era of large powerful images on websites

The expression “A picture is worth a thousand words” refers to the notion that an idea can be conveyed with a single image instead of a long verbal or written description. This concept is still true today especially on the Internet where there is no possible personal/physical interactions with website visitors.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could convey your message to your website visitors in 5 seconds or less?

It is possible with the use of the right image (either a photo, graphic or combination of both) which can convey a complex idea and evoke a feeling in matter of seconds. Even an embedded video receives far more viewers if it has a powerful and relevant thumbnail as its first screen.

=1= The mechanics behind displaying a large image:

Thanks to new coding techniques and the fact that most Internet users in developed countries have access to high speed Internet, you can now have large high resolution images or photos on your website.

* It could be a single full screen still image which means the image would expand to the full extent of the user’s computer screen. Though it is a still image, it can have a deep meaning, connect with your target audience, and convey a clear message. By doing so, the image captures the audience’s full attention and subconsciously encourages an action on their part. It may be buying a product on the website, reserve a hotel room or other types of calls-to-action.

* Large images can be used in sliders (also called slideshows) that either rotate on their own or with a forth and back button that the user controls.

* It can also be a large image that represents a collage of various images.

=1= How to purposely use a large image:

If you feel your website will benefit in using a large image, make sure you have a plan and purpose. Do not do it simply because it is pretty or “it kinds of look like what you do”.

Using large images on a website works well if it does one of the following:

* It is a perfect representation of your services and products. Ex: Apple Computers has a photo of its iPad as a background image for the iPad section of its website.

* It is an image that pushes your brand forward. If branding is crucial to what you do, make sure it is there nice and big so it cannot be missed.

* The image highlights the benefits of using your company. Ex: Showing the results of construction services with a nice photo of a finished project.

* The image illustrates a concept that helps support the call-to-action (aka what you want your visitors to do next). Ex: It is used as a background and a clickable button is place on top of the image.
